Luke Adam Injured: Rookie of the Year Hopes in Jeopardy?

Buffalo74 has touched on Portland Rookie Luke Adam’s incredible charge up the AHL stat sheet this season.

Last night, in a game against the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, Adam was injured in a collision with Mark Katic.

From the Portland Press Herald:

Luke Adam of the Pirates injured his sternum less than seven minutes into the second after taking a hard hip check from defenseman Mark Katic.

(Coach) Dineen said. “I don’t think it’s a long-term thing, but we’ll evaluate him (this) morning.”

Let’s hope for a better prognosis later on.  I am sure the injury hurts a heckuva lot, but losing that historic 3rd Rookie of the Year award in a row would sting him a good deal, too.

Adam is currently tied in points with Rhett Rakhshani for the rookie lead with 54 points. (Adam has reached the mark in 48 games to Rakhshani’s 59.)

Go Pirates/Sabres.

UPDATE: Adam is listed with a bruised sternum, and is day to day.  He should return to action on Tuesday.

Even with the injury; sports writers Awards ballots for the AHL are due today (March 28); so it shouldn’t be an issue.
