Losing to Dallas in the 1999 Stanley Cup Finals was sure a tough pill to swallow, but at least Sabres fans got to enjoy destroying the Maple Leafs in the Eastern Conference Finals.
They also got to enjoy this iconic hit by Mike Peca on Tie Domi. Watch in amazement, as Mike Peca emerges from the penalty box as a virtual stanchion in front of the unexpecting Domi:
Two days later, Sabres fans got to enjoy watching their boys score 3 goals in a 2 minute and 35 second span against the reeling Leafs (including a nifty tip-in by none other than Rob Ray), en route to a 5-2 victory and a 3-1 series lead. It’s not often you get to see a Lindy Ruff smile – and there’s a big one at the 1:27 mark of the video (followed by surly Leafs’ coach Pat Quinn vexedly chewing gum).
The Sabres then finished off the Leafs in Toronto, 4-2, to close out the series. A Sabres fan gave everyone watching the game on TV a brief but very effective lesson on the importance of haircuts and not rolling up the sleeves of your fan jersey (hit the 2:10 mark of the video).
The deal is sealed and Quinn’s vexing gum seems as if it has totally emptied out of flavor (at the 3:10 mark).
Sure, sure, Hasek was big that series, and the offense was rolling, but I like to think that hit by Peca really set the tone for this series. The Leafs never did recover from it.
